Abnormal expression of certain genes correlates to occurrence of colorectal cancer. Presence of mRNA of these genes in feces or in blood may be used in diagnosis of the cancer. Detection of intestine-specific mRNA in blood or in lymph nodes may also be a strong indicator of disease metastatic stage.
